“What’s that, Ash? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she replied quickly.
I explained calmly, “It’s an invoice for the cake. I reimbursed Grandma myself because Ashley refused to pay her.”
Ashley snapped her head toward me.
“Why would you put that in our wedding gift?”
“I wanted to see if you’d make things right. Instead, you tried to hide it.”
Then I walked toward the cake.
I released the cart’s brake and carefully wheeled it across the dance floor to my table. Guests began turning to watch, and Ashley hurried after me.
“Stop! What are you doing?”
“I paid for it,” I replied. “I thought I might as well enjoy it.”
“You can’t take the wedding cake! It was made for my wedding!”
I picked up a spoon and slowly raised it toward the frosting.
Ashley shrieked, “Don’t you dare!”
Then she began shouting that I was jealous and trying to ruin her wedding. Daniel followed her, looking completely bewildered.
