“No! I’M Evelyn Carter!”
She shook her head slowly.
“You’re the one who doesn’t remember.”
Then she reached into a box and pulled out an old newspaper.
The headline read:
LOCAL WOMAN PRESUMED DEAD AFTER MYSTERIOUS HOUSE FIRE — HUSBAND MISSING.
The article was dated twenty years earlier.
Beneath the headline was a photograph of a young woman standing beside a man.
The woman was me.
And the man was Richard.
My hands began to tremble.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered. “I met Richard only three months ago.”
The younger woman shook her head.
“You didn’t meet him three months ago. You were married to him twenty years ago.”
I couldn’t breathe.
She explained that Richard and I had once lived in the same house. kh One night, a fire had broken out, and everyone believed I had died.
But my body had never been found.
