But Robert opened another yellowed folder.
“A few months before his death, your father discovered that his business partner had been embezzling money from the company for years. When your father tried to report it, his partner began threatening your family.”
“And what did Elizabeth have to do with it?”
“She found the documents your father had left behind. But she decided not to tell you anything yet. You were still studying, and your mother was ill.”
Robert paused for a moment.
“Elizabeth was preparing to hand those documents over to a lawyer. But before she could do that, she was involved in a car accident.”
My heart tightened.
My sister really had died in a car accident. I was 23 at the time.
“Are you saying her accident wasn’t an accident?”
“I don’t know, Mary. And that’s the most painful part. No one could prove that the crash was deliberate.”
