I spent half the night imagining how I would surprise him when he returned from his business trip.
At 6:14 the next morning, headlights swept across the driveway.
Mark’s car.
He wasn’t supposed to be home until Friday.
I hurried downstairs.
The winning ticket was already sealed inside a plastic sleeve in my purse.
I was actually smiling when I reached the entryway.
Then the door opened.
Mark stepped inside.
And beside him was a tall blonde woman carrying an overnight bag.
He barely looked uncomfortable.
“This is Vanessa.”
I stared at him.
Vanessa gave me a tight little smile.
Mark loosened his tie like he was checking into a hotel.
“I’m done pretending this marriage works.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“Pack whatever belongs to you. I’m leaving you for her.”
For a few seconds, the room seemed to tilt beneath me.
Six years of marriage ended in one sentence.
