“You offered her twelve months of free housing.”
“She needs breathing room.”
“A year is not breathing room, Colin.”
“She doesn’t need another person judging her.”
“I’m not judging her. I’m asking why you gave away something you knew I was planning to rent.”
“I didn’t give anything away.”
“She brought fabric samples.”
“I was going to talk to you.”
“Then why did she think September first was settled?”
He didn’t have an answer that made sense.
I could feel myself preparing to explain the loan again.
Then I stopped.
He already knew.
“I need you to go home tonight.”
“We’re supposed to have dinner with the Millers.”
“Tell them I’m not coming.”
“What am I supposed to say?”
“Whatever you want. You seem very comfortable making arrangements for other people.”
It was harsh.
I didn’t take it back.
After he left, I started noticing memories I had previously dismissed.
