Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

Colin looked at me as though I had embarrassed him in front of a guest.

“She’s trying to finish school.”

“I know.”

Vanessa worked at a salon reception desk while studying for her cosmetology license. Her roommate was moving out, tuition was expensive, and Vanessa had been struggling to find affordable housing.

Colin had mentioned all of that before.

What he had never mentioned was that he had solved the problem by giving away my guest house.

“You have a whole separate house back here,” he said.

“Yes. A house I renovated so I could rent it.”

“To strangers.”

“That’s usually how renting works.”

Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.

Then she said, “Colin told me the washing machine was in the main house. I wouldn’t bother you. I usually work Saturdays, so I could do laundry on Mondays.”

I slowly turned toward him.

“You offered her my laundry room too?”
