Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

That sentence somehow made things worse.

Vanessa had fabric samples spread across the small kitchen counter. Underneath them was the move-in checklist I had printed earlier that morning.

A checklist meant for someone else.

“When exactly were you planning to move in?” I asked.

“September first,” Vanessa replied. “Is that still okay?”

September first.

Three weeks away.

The exact date another woman, Ruth Delgado, had written on her rental application.

“We never discussed this,” I said to Colin.

“We were going to.”

“When?”

He glanced toward Vanessa.

“Paige, maybe we should talk outside.”

Vanessa had already opened one of the new kitchen drawers and was examining the matte-black handle.

“I was wondering if these could be changed to gold,” she said. “I could pay for them.”

I stared at the handle.

I had installed every one myself.

“No.”

She blinked.

“I said I’d pay.”

“I mean you’re not moving in.”
