Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

“I don’t want to start over.”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“Do you still love me?”

I wished he had not asked.

“I miss you,” I admitted. “I miss telling you things. Sometimes I still want to call.”

“Then why can’t we try again?”

“Because I told you to stop, and you went to Ruth anyway.”

He looked down.

“You knew I had not agreed. You knew I was upset. And instead of respecting the answer, you kept looking for another way around me.”

“I wouldn’t do it again.”

“I don’t want to spend a marriage waiting to discover whether that’s true.”

He had nothing left to say.

After almost an hour, I stood.

“So should I stop texting you?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

I walked to my car and cried until I was calm enough to drive.

Then I called Aaron.
