“Did you want to get back together with her?”
“No. I wanted to marry you.”
“And have your ex living behind our house?”
He looked ashamed.
“I didn’t think about what that would be like every day.”
“I would have had to.”
“I know.”
He explained that Vanessa saw him as someone who could solve problems.
He liked being that person.

“You could have told her you were wrong.”
“I should have.”
I had wanted those words for weeks.
Hearing them did not make me want the wedding back.
He told me he had scheduled therapy.
Then he asked whether I might come someday.
“No.”
“Not to plan another wedding. Just to talk. We could keep your house and rental separate financially. I understand now.”
