Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

He met Ruth outside and told her there were “unresolved family arrangements” concerning the guest house.

He suggested she delay moving.

Ruth wanted written confirmation of who owned the property and who had authority over her lease.

She had postponed booking her moving truck.

I called her immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

“I appreciate the apology,” she said, “but I’m relocating for work. I need somewhere to live. I cannot be stopped in the driveway and pulled into your family problems.”

She was right.

After we hung up, I called Colin.

“What did you tell Ruth?”

“The truth. We’re still discussing things.”

“No. We are not discussing whether she moves in.”

“You refuse to discuss anything.”

“You approached my tenant after I told you this was settled.”

“I didn’t threaten her.”

“I didn’t say you did. But do not return to my house without permission, and do not speak to Ruth again.”
