For the first time in years, Emily Whitaker walked away from her family’s house without knowing whether she would ever see it again.
But strangely, beneath the fear, there was something else.
Relief.
The hospital doors closed behind her as Angela Moore pushed her wheelchair toward a waiting vehicle. Emily looked back one last time.
Her father was still standing near the entrance.
He wasn’t shouting anymore.
He wasn’t ordering anyone around.
For once, he looked uncertain.
Emily lowered her eyes.
She had spent years believing that telling the truth would destroy her family.
She had never imagined that keeping the truth hidden was what had been destroying her.
That night, Emily was placed with a licensed emergency foster family while CPS continued its investigation.
The first night was difficult.
