“She promised I could

do it.”

I gently brushed the hair away from her face.

“Sometimes plans change, sweetheart.”

Her eyes grew watery.

“Did I do something bad?”

I pulled her into my arms.

“Absolutely not. You’ve done nothing wrong.”

She nodded quietly.

But I could tell she was disappointed.

“I know that. But Sophie was so excited.”

He shrugged.

“She’ll get over it.”

I stared at him.

“That’s all you have to say?”

“What do you want me to do? Argue with my sister over a wedding?”

I didn’t answer.

I wasn’t asking him to start an argument.

I simply wanted him to care that our daughter’s feelings had been hurt.
