“Ben, come meet your daughter.”
He approached the bed smiling.
But the moment he looked at Evelyn, his face turned pale.
“No,” he whispered. “This can’t be happening.”
Then he shouted something I will never forget.
“THIS ISN’T THE BABY I WANTED!”
Diane rushed forward, looked at Evelyn, and covered her mouth.
“What a disappointment,” she whispered.
I couldn’t understand.
“What’s wrong with our baby?”
Ben refused to answer.
“When you’re discharged, don’t come home. I want a divorce.”
Then he walked out.
His mother followed him.
Two days later, when my parents drove me home from the hospital, my belongings were waiting outside in black trash bags.
Ben had even changed the locks.
That night, I cried while holding Evelyn against my chest.
But the following morning, someone knocked desperately on my parents’ door.
It was Ben.
Diane stood behind him, sobbing.
Ben dropped to his knees.
