THE FIRST CALL
Thomas’s phone rang.
General counsel.
He answered.
His face changed within seconds.
Then came the CFO.
Then a board member.
Then another director.
Assistants started moving quickly behind the glass conference-room walls.
Thomas slammed down his phone.
“What did you do?”
I leaned back.
“What you taught everyone else never to do.”
He stared.
“I kept records.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“This family gave you a name.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“You offered me a cage.”
Then:
“And engraved BLACKWELL on the door.”
Sophie threw her purse onto the table.
“You really think people will believe you?”
She pointed at my cheek.
“You married Adrian yesterday. This will look like a financial setup.”
Naomi opened another folder.
“There is dining-room video.”
She counted on her fingers.
“Audio.”
“Medical documentation scheduled this afternoon.”
“Household witnesses.”
“Security logs.”
Sophie’s confidence vanished.
The Blackwells had spent decades treating employees like furniture.
They had forgotten furniture still has eyes.
ADRIAN TRIED LOVE NEXT
“Claire.”
He softened his expression.
“Baby.”
I stared at him.
“We can fix this.”
“I was stressed.”
“My family was pushing me.”
“You know I love you.”
For a moment—
memories came back.
Our first date.
The soup he brought when I had the flu.
Adrian standing beside my father’s grave.
His hand around mine.
His voice telling me:
“You’ll never have to be alone again.”
Once, those memories had felt sacred.
Now they looked rehearsed.
“You loved the distribution rights.”
His jaw tightened.
“You loved my father’s shares.”
Silence.
“You loved that I didn’t have living parents to warn me about you.”
There.
His face changed.
The real Adrian came back.
FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS ARRIVED AT 10:26
No doors were kicked down.
No dramatic shouting.
Men and women in plain clothes entered with credentials and warrants.
Calm voices.
Controlled instructions.
Nobody was permitted to delete email.
Destroy documents.
Remove devices.
By late morning, business partners had begun freezing agreements.
At noon, the first alert appeared.
BLACKWELL BIOSYSTEMS FACES FEDERAL INQUIRY OVER DEVICE SAFETY REPORTING AND FOREIGN PAYMENTS
Adrian read the headline.
“This can still be contained.”
Thomas did not look nearly as confident.
“It can’t,” I said.
Thomas turned on me.
“You stupid girl.”
Naomi’s associate shifted forward.
Thomas stopped.
Thousands of people depend on this company,” he snapped.
“Then perhaps you shouldn’t have built it on falsified safety reports.”
He said nothing.
