Three duplicate keys.
Paid for at 8:14 that morning.
So one key was older.
Somehow, that felt worse.
Then my phone rang.
Liam.
I answered.
“Hey,” he said cheerfully. “Did you make it to the grocery store?”
“Yeah.”
“Good. Don’t forget coffee.”
“Liam?”
Something in my voice must have registered because he went quiet.
I picked up the blue key.
“Why are there four keys underneath your driver’s seat?”
The silence was heavy.
Then Liam asked, “Which ones?”
I sat back. “Which ones?”
“Oh, God. Meryl, that’s not what I meant.”
“Apparently you have enough secret keys that color coding matters.”
“They aren’t secret.”
“They’re under your seat.” I looked at the receipt. “And you had them made this morning.”
“Meryl, put them back exactly where you found them.”
I actually laughed.
“That is the worst possible thing you could’ve said.”
“I know how it sounds.”
