I unbuckled my seat belt and pushed my hand into the gap.
My fingers brushed metal.
“Got you.”
Except it wasn’t my lip balm.
I pulled out a brass key with a blue rubber cap.
My heart started beating faster.
It wasn’t our house key.
I leaned down again and felt something soft wedged beneath the seat rail. A small zippered key pouch had fallen open.
Three more keys lay beside it.
Red. Green. Yellow.
All ordinary brass keys, each marked with a different colored rubber cap.
I found my lip balm wedged behind the seat rail, but the keys had my attention now.
I sat upright and lined them across my thigh.
Liam didn’t own rental properties.
He didn’t manage apartments.
We had no storage unit.
And I knew exactly where our spare house keys were.
I reached beneath the seat one more time.
This time I found a small hardware-store receipt folded in half.
