After my divorce, I bought a house and told no one. While I was out of state, my cameras showed a moving truck in my driveway. Then I saw my ex-husband and his new wife carrying their furniture inside. I didn’t call him. I called the police.

That I left the marriage with a large amount of cash.

That I secretly bought a house.

That he and Vanessa only needed somewhere temporary.

Then I interrupted.

“What date was our divorce finalized?”

He said nothing.

Emily answered.

“January seventeenth.”

“And when did I close on the house?”

Again, Mark said nothing.

I pulled one document from my purse.

My closing statement.

“August third. Seven months later.”

I explained that the down payment came from my legally awarded half of our former home equity plus my own income.

Mark became angry.

“But that money came from what we built together!”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“My court-awarded half of what we built together.”

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“You told me she offered the house to us.”

Mark turned toward her.

“I said she knew.”

“No. You said she offered it.”

That was new even to me.

I told everyone about the locksmith.
