After my divorce, I bought a house and told no one. While I was out of state, my cameras showed a moving truck in my driveway. Then I saw my ex-husband and his new wife carrying their furniture inside. I didn’t call him. I called the police.

I didn’t know how to answer that.

Then she called two days later.

Mark was planning to use Diane’s Labor Day cookout to tell the entire family that I had stolen money from him.

My first instinct was not to go.

Then I reread his message.

Clare hates conflict.

She’ll let us stay.

He was still counting on the old version of me.

So I baked a cherry pie.

And went to the cookout.

When I arrived, everyone was there.

Mark.

Vanessa.

Emily.

Diane.

His sister.

His brother-in-law.

Family friends.

A jury.

Emily looked terrified when she saw me.

Diane stared at the pie.

“You brought dessert?”

“I wasn’t raised by wolves.”

Mark was less amused.

“What are you doing here?”

“Enjoying a cookout.”

For twenty minutes, everyone pretended things were normal.

Then someone finally asked Mark about the Worthington house.

Mark began his speech.

He said we had built everything together.
