Over the years, work and family had caused the three of them to move farther and farther apart. We mostly saw them on holidays, and sometimes months passed when all we had were phone calls and video chats.
But during the previous year, they had made a decision.
They were all moving to the same small town.
David had already bought a house nearby.
Emily lived only two streets away.
Michael was moving the following month.
And the white house in front of us?
They had bought it for us.
It was only a few minutes away from each of their homes.
I slowly turned toward Robert.
“Then why did you tell me I would never see my children again?”
For the first time that entire day, he smiled.
“Because I didn’t finish the sentence.”
I narrowed my eyes at him.
He stepped closer.
“What I meant was… after today, you’ll never see your children only through a phone screen again.”
