I looked at the clock.
12:08 a.m.
For forty-five years, this woman had waited through the same heartbreaking night.
And tonight, someone had finally come home.
But one question remained.
“How did you find me?”
Richard handed me a thick envelope.
Inside were photographs, old adoption records, and a letter.
“I hired another investigator last year. He found a child placed with the Carter family shortly after the accident. Her age and necklace matched our missing granddaughter’s.”
He hesitated.
“We also found the hospital’s original records. You survived because a passing couple helped you after the accident. But you were too frightened to tell anyone your full name.”
“My parents?”
“Yes. Helen and Thomas Carter eventually adopted you.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“My father died five years ago. And my mother’s in the hospital.”
“I know,” Richard answered gently. “That’s why I offered the money.”
He took my hand.
