Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

Later that day, Vanessa contacted me herself.

She said Colin kept telling her we were “still figuring it out.”

I told her there was nothing left to figure out.

The guest house had been rented.

She came to my porch after work.

“I’m not trying to take advantage of you,” she said.

“I didn’t say you were.”

Then she explained that she had turned down another room because Colin assured her my guest house was available.

I genuinely felt sorry for her.

Then she handed me her phone.

She had previously asked Colin whether I was truly comfortable with her living there.

She had even asked whether she should contact me directly.

His response was on the screen.

Paige is fine with it. She just gets nervous about money. Let me handle her.

I read it twice.

“He said you two had discussed everything,” Vanessa said.

“We didn’t.”
