Vanessa was already measuring the bedroom wall in my guest house when she casually told me she’d be living there for a year, rent-free.

“Yes.”

“You’re really doing this now?”

“I was doing it before Vanessa showed up with a tape measure.”

I met Ruth the next afternoon.

Before signing anything, I contacted the attorney who had previously reviewed my rental documents. I explained exactly what happened.

Vanessa had never occupied the property.

She had paid nothing.

She had no key.

Colin did not own the property.

He had never been authorized to manage it.

The attorney confirmed that Colin could not offer someone housing in a property that belonged solely to me.

I sent written notice to both Colin and Vanessa making that clear.

Three days later, Ruth and I signed a twelve-month lease for $1,450 a month.

When Colin saw the signed folder, he looked stunned.

“You actually did it?”

“Yes.”

“You knew I promised Vanessa.”

“That promise wasn’t yours to make.”

Then I said something I had been thinking about for days.
