Part 3 — What Really Happened
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid of Grant Whitmore.
I had faced fear in too many forms to be frightened by a man standing on my porch.
I couldn’t sleep because of the photograph.
The words written on its back kept returning to me.
SHE LEFT US BEHIND.
At 2:17 in the morning, I finally walked into the kitchen and turned on the light.
Noah was asleep upstairs.
I opened the cabinet above the refrigerator.
Behind an old coffee tin was a small metal box.
I hadn’t touched it in years.
Inside was a folded American flag, three photographs, my old service identification card, and a handwritten letter.
I picked up the photograph on top.
Six soldiers stood beside a helicopter.
I was younger.
Much younger.
Standing in the center was a captain with tired eyes and a crooked smile.
