Neither statement had been true.
Maren closed the laptop.
“Oh my God.”
I looked at her.
“For years I thought you didn’t like me.”
She started crying.
“I thought you resented me.”
“I did resent you.”
She flinched.
“But not all the distance was ours.”
That mattered.
We had hurt each other.
Victor had not created everything.
But he had widened every crack because division made him central.
If Maren and I communicated through him, he controlled the interpretation.
If we were close, we could compare notes.
That possibility had apparently made him uncomfortable.
“I want to fix it,” Maren said.
“We can’t fix thirty years today.”
“I know.”
“But we can stop letting someone else narrate the relationship.”
She nodded.
That was a beginning.
Later that afternoon, Julian and I walked through Larkmere Botanical Grounds because neither of us wanted another conversation inside the apartment.
He had been quiet all morning.
Finally I asked:
“What aren’t you telling me?”
He smiled faintly.
“You know me too well.”
“What?”
“I got an offer.”
My stomach tightened.
“Where?”
“Westmere.”
A fictional coastal city almost a thousand miles away.
“What kind of offer?”
“Partnership track.”
“Better litigation resources.”
“A pro bono division I’ve wanted to build for years.”
I stopped walking.
“When did this happen?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“You didn’t tell me.”
“No.”
That hurt.
Then the irony hit.
I laughed bitterly.
“We’re very good at protecting each other with secrets.”
“Yes.”
“Were you going to accept?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Decline?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Then what were you waiting for?”
Julian looked at me.
“To see whether we still knew how to make decisions together.”
That landed exactly where it needed to.
For three years, I had kept my family outside our marriage.
Eventually I had started keeping parts of myself inside separate rooms too.
“I never hid you because I was ashamed of you.”
“I know.”
“I think I was ashamed that they could still affect me.”
Julian reached for my hand.
“Then let’s stop letting people who aren’t in this marriage make our decisions.”
We did not decide about Westmere that day.
That was progress.
Sunday morning was the family brunch.
I almost skipped it.
Then went because I chose to.
Julian came with me.
When we entered the private dining room at Rosemere Hall, conversation softened.
Victor stood.
I expected another speech.
He did not make one.
He only said:
“Morning.”
We sat.
Coffee arrived.
People talked about the wedding.
For twenty minutes, everything felt painfully normal.
Then Victor touched his spoon to his water glass.
My entire body tightened.
Maren looked at him.
“Dad.”
He put the spoon down immediately.
“No speech.”
A few people gave uncomfortable smiles.
Then Victor looked directly at me.
“I owe Evelyn an apology.”
The table went silent.
He swallowed.
“What I did at the fountain was wrong.”
“No joke qualifies that.”
“I embarrassed my daughter because I cared more about keeping people entertained than noticing what I was doing to her.”
I watched him.
No excuse.

I was drinking.
He continued.
“I’ve apparently been doing smaller versions of the same thing for years.”
Maren looked down.
Victor said:
“And I interfered in communication between my daughters.”
There it was.
Directly.
“I thought I was preventing conflict.”
Maren looked up.
“That is not what you were doing.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“No.”
“I see that now.”
I wanted desperately to believe him.
That was almost more frightening than anger.
Hope makes people vulnerable.
Victor looked at me.
“I don’t expect forgiveness today.”
“Good.”
A few people inhaled.
Victor almost smiled.
Then stopped himself.
“I would like the chance to understand what I’ve done.”
“That will take time.”
“I know.”
No hug.
No applause.
No instant repair.
That made it believable.
After brunch, Helena found me near the hotel garden.
She carried a small wooden box.
“There’s something else.”
I looked at it.
“What?”
“I went home last night.”
“Victor and I argued.”
“I started looking through the old study.”
My stomach tightened.
She opened the box.
Inside were envelopes tied with blue ribbon.
My grandmother Margaret Langford had died when I was twenty.
She had been the safest person in my childhood.
She listened.
Never mocked.
Never compared Maren and me.
After her death, I believed she had simply stopped writing during her final illness.
Helena handed me the first envelope.
My name was on the front.
For Evelyn. Personal.
The seal had been broken.
Not by me.
The postmark was from twelve years earlier.
