He swallowed.
“Then why?”
“Because I want to know if we can start again.”
He stared at her.
“Start again?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“But this time, there is no employer and employee.”
He felt tears fill his eyes.
“And what are we?”
She stepped closer.
“Two people who are choosing each other.”
He reached for her hand.
Then stopped.
Old fear returned to his face.
She noticed.
So she took his hand herself.
He looked down at their joined hands.
For the first time, he didn’t feel like he had won something.
He felt like he had been trusted with something precious.
Then she whispered,
“There’s one more thing.”
He looked up.
“I accepted a job.”
His smile disappeared.
“Where?”
“At the community center you started supporting.”
He blinked.
“You knew?”
“I figured it out.”
She laughed softly.
“You were never as mysterious as you thought.”
He laughed too.
