He nodded.
I held up the red key.
“So who’s red?”
Liam froze.
It wasn’t fear.
He simply looked caught.
I waited.
Finally he said, “You.”
I stared at him.
“We live in the same house.”
“It’s not for the house.”
“Then what is it for?”
Liam stood.
“Meryl…”
“What did you make a key for?”
He looked at Frank.
Frank raised both hands.
“Don’t involve me. I enjoy being alive.”
Liam took his jacket.
“Come on.”
I followed him outside and stopped beside his SUV.
“Liam, where are we going?”
He looked at the red key in my hand.
Then at me.
“Your mechanic.”
And suddenly I remembered exactly where my own car had been all day.
At the mechanic, Liam walked straight to the counter.
“I’m here about Meryl’s car.”
The employee glanced at the red-capped key in my hand.
“Oh. You already picked up the spare.”
