I stared at my father.
“When did you start doing this?”
“About two months ago.”
“Why?”
He looked at Ben.
“Because he can’t tell you what he’s feeling.”
I went quiet.
“At first, I thought I was imagining it,” Dad continued. “But then I kept seeing the same thing. After playing, he would sit down. He didn’t want to put as much weight on his right leg. And some days, the area around his knee turned red.”
“And instead of telling me, you decided to use iodine and urmegg?”
First aid supplies
Dad lowered his eyes.
“That was wrong. My mother used something similar when we were children. I thought it might calm the redness. I should never have tried it.”
The doctor spoke firmly.
“Do not do that again.”
Then he looked back at the notebook.
“But keep these records.”
Ben was sent for additional tests.
Two days later, we returned for the results.
I could barely breathe.
The doctor sat across from us.
“The good news is that we caught this very early.”
