Fifteen minutes before leaving for the airport, my 6-year-old daughter clung to my neck and whispered: “When you travel, mom puts something in my juice and then films me.”

Her mouth opened, but no words came immediately.

Then she changed tactics.

“It was just a mild supplement, to calm her down,” she stammered.

“She was hyperactive!

You refused to see that she needed help!”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Do not ever speak my daughter’s name again.”

Sarah began to break down.

She moved from denial to pleading, claiming Julian had manipulated her, that the estate taxes were overwhelming, and that everything she had done was supposedly about financial stability for the family.

Then she said the sentence that ended the discussion.

“At the end of the day, that house was going to belong to Lily anyway!”

Victoria slowly raised her eyes from her notepad.

“Which is precisely why,” she said, “you had zero legal or moral right to conspire against a minor child in order to control it.”

Sarah realized too late what she had just admitted in front of an attorney.
