A six-year-old girl found the courage to speak in the final hour, and for Marcus, the thought of how narrowly they escaped would remain terrifying.
Chapter 14 — The Rider
“What kind of rider?” Marcus asked.
“It proposed transferring secondary managerial authority of the estate to an appointed third party,” Victoria said, “in the event that you became temporarily incapacitated, or if Lily was placed into full-time residential behavioral care.”
She paused.
“The designated secondary trustee named in that rider was Sarah.”
For the first time that day, Marcus could not speak.
Slowly, the entire architecture of the plan became visible.
The document by itself would not have been enough to simply seize the house.
There were legal and judicial safeguards.
But the rider revealed the objective.
What Sarah and Julian needed was a convincing story.
They were manufacturing Lily on video into an unmanageable child with serious psychological problems, someone who supposedly needed residential treatment.
