So I took my house with me.
Dad called seventeen times before noon.
I answered the eighteenth.
“What did you do?” he shouted.
I sat in my car outside my new apartment, watching rain streak down the windshield.
“I left,” I said.
“The realtor is here!”
“Yes.”
“She says the house is under contract.”
“Yes.”
His voice cracked.
“You can’t sell our home.”
“It isn’t your home, Dad. It’s mine.”
Silence.
Then Diane grabbed the phone.
“You vindictive little—”
I ended the call.
An hour later, Jason texted me a legal threat.
I forwarded it to my attorney.
By Monday, everyone knew.
Aunt Carol called first, not to apologize, but to ask where Christmas dinner would happen now.
I almost laughed.
“There won’t be one.”
“But you already booked everything.”
“I canceled it.”
Her disappointment sounded more offended than Dad had when he told me to disappear.
