At 2 a.m., my husband left for the airport with his mistress, convinced I was asleep. He sent a cruel goodbye photo. I replied with four words that made him call me immediately in panic.

Under the photo, Daniel had written:

“Goodbye, useless woman. By morning, there’ll be nothing left for you.”

I stared at the message until my heartbeat steadied.

Then I typed four words.

“The accounts are frozen.”

His call came almost immediately.

PART 2

Daniel was already shouting when I answered.

“What did you do?”

I sat at the kitchen island in my robe while dawn slowly brightened the windows.

“Good morning, Daniel.”

“Don’t play games with me. The transfers aren’t going through. My cards aren’t working. Vanessa’s card isn’t working. What did you do?”

I smiled.

“You mean the company cards you weren’t supposed to use for personal travel?”

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

“You’re confused.”

“No, Daniel. For the first time in our marriage, you’re the confused one.”

He immediately softened his tone.

“Audrey, sweetheart, whatever you think you saw—”

“I saw twelve questionable signatures, three unauthorized transfer attempts, $640,000 routed through a vendor account, and $68,000 in personal expenses charged to Hawthorne Holdings.”
