There it was.
Clare Bennett.
Sole owner.
Then I called the police.
“My ex-husband and his new wife are moving furniture into a house I legally own,” I told the dispatcher. “I’m four hours away. Neither of them has permission to be there.”
She asked whether Mark lived at the address.
“No.”
Had he ever lived there?
“No.”
Was I the sole legal owner?
“Yes.”
Then she asked something that made my stomach tighten.
“Do you know how he gained entry?”
I looked again at the image of his hand pressing the keypad.
“No,” I said.
And suddenly the moving truck wasn’t the most disturbing part anymore.
Police arrived within twenty minutes.
I watched everything remotely.
Mark and Vanessa were attempting to force a huge gray sectional through my front door when the first cruiser pulled up.
An officer asked who owned the house.
“My ex-wife,” Mark said immediately.
