“And you’re going to the police in the morning.”
“They might arrest me.”
“Maybe.”
I held his gaze.
“But those men threatened your children.”
Then I told him I had found an inpatient gambling-treatment program outside Harrisburg.
Thirty days.
A bed was available Tuesday.
“I can’t afford that.”
I put my hand on the cash box.
“Mom already paid.”
Greg stared at me.
“She didn’t save this money so you could gamble again.”
I pushed the will toward him.
“She saved it for the day you were ready to stop.”
A long silence passed.
Then he whispered,
“Okay.”
The next morning, Vanessa joined us at the police station.
A detective listened to Greg’s story.
When he described the men who had threatened his family, she became very serious.
Police had apparently been investigating them already.
Greg agreed to cooperate.
Two days later, I drove him to treatment.
