The lock was old but intact.
The investigator photographed it before cutting it open.
The door rolled upward with a metallic rattle.
Dust floated in the golden evening light.
Inside were pieces of a life interrupted.
A crib frame.
Boxes of baby clothes.
A lamp with a cracked shade.
Rachel’s winter coats.
Two kitchen chairs.
And against the back wall, stacked beneath a blue tarp, were six banker’s boxes labeled in Rachel’s neat handwriting.
KELLER FILES.
Amelia stepped forward slowly.
No one spoke.
The investigator opened the first box.
Inside were receipts, ledgers, photocopied checks, handwritten notes, and several cassette tapes wrapped in rubber bands.
Mitchell lifted one carefully.
The label read:
M.K. / R.W. / REED MEETING.
Rachel’s initials.
Rachel Walker Cole.
Gavin’s wife had not merely known something.
She had documented it.
Denise pressed a hand to her chest. “Rachel knew.”
Amelia looked at the boxes, at the tapes, at the careful labels written by a woman who had died before she could tell the world why her husband was innocent.
